Privacy Policy
Last updated 11 October 2026
WatchDatez helps you keep track of the shows and movies you watch and tells you when new seasons are coming. This policy explains what information the WatchDatez website and iPhone app collect, why we collect it, who it is shared with, and how you can delete it. We collect as little as we can.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address and your password. We never store your password itself. We store only a one-way cryptographic hash of it.
- Your lists: the shows and movies you add, which list each one is on (Watching, Watched or Watchlist), any ratings you give, the dates you added or finished them, and whether you want updates about each title.
- Your settings: whether email updates are switched on.
- Updates we've sent you: a record of each release update (for example "Season 3 premieres on 14 March") so we never send you the same one twice.
- Push notification tokens: if you allow notifications in the iPhone app, Apple gives us a token that lets us send notifications to that device. It identifies the app on your device, not you personally.
- Security records: a count of recent failed sign-in attempts, so we can temporarily lock an account that someone is trying to break into. If you ask to reset your password, we keep a short-lived, hashed reset link.
- Server logs: like most websites, our servers record basic request information (such as IP address, time and the page or API requested) to keep the service running and secure.
We do not collect your name, location, contacts, photos, payment details or any advertising identifiers. We do not use analytics or advertising trackers, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
Stored on your device
The iPhone app keeps your sign-in token in the iOS Keychain. It also keeps a few preferences on your device: your email address, your notification choices, and when you last opened Updates. The website keeps your sign-in token, your email address and when you last opened Updates in your browser's local storage. Signing out removes your sign-in token and email address from the device.
How we use it
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To show your lists and look up release dates for the titles you follow.
- To send the email and push notifications you've asked for, and password reset emails when you request them.
- To keep the service working, prevent abuse and fix problems.
We never sell your information or use it for advertising.
Who we share it with
We only share information with the services we need to run WatchDatez:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) hosts our servers and database in the London (eu-west-2) region and sends our emails.
- Apple Push Notification service delivers notifications to your iPhone. It receives your device token and the text of the notification.
- The Movie Database (TMDB) provides show and movie information. Our servers send TMDB your search terms and the titles we need to check, but never your email or account details. Posters are loaded directly from TMDB's image servers, so TMDB can see your IP address when your device loads them. See TMDB's privacy policy.
- Google Fonts serves the font used on the website, so Google can see your IP address when your browser loads it. See Google's privacy policy.
We may also disclose information if the law requires us to.
How long we keep it
We keep your account information for as long as you have an account. Password reset links expire after an hour. Server logs are kept only for a limited period for security and troubleshooting. When you delete your account, your email address, password hash, lists, ratings, update history and push tokens are permanently deleted straight away.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account: open Settings → Delete account on the website or in the iPhone app.
- Turn off notifications: switch off email updates or iPhone notifications in Settings at any time. You can also turn off updates for individual titles.
- Access, correct or export your data: email us and we'll help.
Depending on where you live (for example the UK or the EU), you may have further rights, such as the right to object to how we use your data or to complain to your data protection authority. In the UK, that is the Information Commissioner's Office.
Security
Connections to WatchDatez are encrypted with HTTPS. Passwords are hashed, sign-in tokens are signed and expire, and repeated failed sign-in attempts lock the account for a while. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Children
WatchDatez is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we'll let you know by email or in the app.
